At BARS Precision, we understand that “one-size-fits-all” does not apply to coating system technology. Every customer has unique challenges to overcome: substrate type and format; solution composition and required solvents; multi-layer coatings; facility floorspace; and of course, budget. That is why we offer a diverse line of coating machines and pumps, combinations of which provide the flexibility needed in thin-film research and development.

Every BARS coating system consists of one type of coating machine combined with at least one type of pump. Additional pumps can be of the same or different style. A History of Innovation

Development of sheet coating technology at BARS Precision Inc. began in 1992 with the production of a syringe-type pump drive and linear transport system that moved a 4” wide slot die over a 42” long temperature-controlled aluminum platen. Since that time, we have produced many variations on this original model, but the same tried-and-true engineering and skill that made the first sheet coater a success has gone into every system BARS has built.

All BARS coating machines feature precision ground stainless steel slot dies. The use of slot dies to dispense a solution onto a substrate provides a greater level of accuracy and—more importantly, when trying to establish parameters for future scaling to full production—repeatability compared to traditional methods such as spin coating or doctor blades.

Thanks to our unique tilting die mounting assembly, the slot die can be tilted from its down (coating) position to a horizontal position for easy disassembly during cleaning and maintenance routines. Since the die is not fully removed from the machine, both coating height (the distance between the die lips and the substrate) and levelness is preserved, saving valuable time and effort. Tilting the slot die further to an inverted (up) position also allows air to be purged from the feed line and die cavity without loss of die positioning or coating height.

Our software monitors machine functions and sets coating parameters

Every BARS coating system features custom computer software controls, allowing an operator to precisely adjust parameters such as wet laydown thickness, coating head velocity, pre-coating dispense, post-coating drawback, and more. A log file is created that records these parameters from every coating routine, so that an operator can quickly recall past settings with the click of a button.

In addition, our system can create a coating with a gradient characteristic. This can be extremely useful in determining optimum coating speeds and/or thicknesses when these values are unknown (i.e., in the early stages of working with a new coating solution).

The BT Coater™

The BT Coater™ is our smallest, most affordable coating machine. A vacuum-held substrate is moved under a stationary slot die via a computer-controlled transport mechanism. Die tilting for cleaning/maintenance and air purge routines is handled manually.

The machine rests on a table top, available from BARS Precision as an option (customer provided tables should meet minimum size and weight bearing requirements). The electronics control enclosure can be mounted to that table or to a nearby wall.

Coating size is 8″ x 11″ (20.3 cm x 27.9 cm) maximum. The auto die tilt mechanism, or the addition of a fume hood and/or structural aluminum base, is not available on the BT Coater™ (the BT Coater™ is intended to be used with non-combustible solvents). Please continue on to read about the LS Coater™ or the FH Coater™ for a more customizable coating machine.

The LS Coater™

The LS Coater™ expands upon the basic coating platform of the BT Coater™, adding a structural aluminum base, air purged sub-enclosures, and a standard fume hood to allow for both aqueous and organic coatings. Like the BT Coater™, our custom computer controls move a vacuum-held substrate under a stationary slot die. Automated die tilting for cleaning/maintenance and air purge routines is available.

Coating size is 8″ x 11″ (20.3 cm x 27.9 cm) maximum. Other options include a temperature controlled platen and a light curtain safety barrier for increased operator safety.

The FH Coater™

The FH Coater™ is our most adaptable coating machine, fulfilling the needs of researchers who require a more customized apparatus for their coating process development. The FH Coater™ uses a computer-controlled transport mechanism to move the shim-adjustable slot die over a vacuum-held substrate. Automated die tilting for cleaning/maintenance and air purge routines is available.

The FH Coater™ comes with a structural aluminum base and a premium fume hood. An optional integrated granite base is available for increased vibration dampening. With air purged sub-enclosures within the hood, the FH Coater™ is capable of both aqueous and organic solvent coating.

The coating size can be customized up to a maximum of 16 inches by 40 inches (40.6 cm by 101.6 cm). A hard-coated aluminum platen is available, which can be temperature controlled, and a light curtain safety barrier is available.

Pumps

Strength, By Design

Our pumps feature a rigid design that eliminates the chatter that can occur with more traditional laboratory style pumps. Our ball-screw driven pumps can handle high viscosity solutions (up to 2,000 cps) and both models can warm or cool the coating solution with an available temperature control system. All pump functions are controlled via our custom software, allowing not only for precise coating process setup but also the rapid recall of past process parameters.

The SP 300™

SP-Left

The SP 300™ is a syringe pump, and can be built to work with one of many commercially available plastic or glass laboratory syringes. Syringe capacity can range from 5 ml to 100 ml, depending on the syringe type selected.

Any air in the syringe left over from filling it with solution is easily expelled from the die feed line in a pre-coating purge routine. A post-coating drawback on the syringe can be programmed into the coating routine. Valves to direct the coating solution to either the slot die or to waste are controlled manually by the operator.

The DDP 95™

DDP-Left

The DDP 95™ uses our cup and piston assembly to pump the coating solution, allowing it to handle solutions of a higher viscosity than the SP 300™. Our precision cup assembly can be disassembled for easy clean-up and reuse; with proper care, a cup assembly can be used for many years.

In addition to temperature control, options include a magnetic stirring attachment to agitate the solution while it waits to be coated, and an automatic valve system controlled by software. To reduce the possibility of operator error, the DDP-95™ pump can be configured to automatically fill via a pressurized reservoir and/or incorporate a solvent wash pressurized tank. By adding a second DDP-95™, the system can be configured to run continuously (as long as coating solution remains in the reservoir).
